'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Svensson nearly there

Captain Michael Svensson came through Tuesday night`s reserve match unscathed, with the game ending 2-1 to the Saints against Championship rivals Swansea. The Saints skipper could be fit for Saturday`s tough away day to the Madejski Stadium.

The Saints have a few defensive problems. Alex Pearce, who signed on loan from Reading, is unable to play against his parent club. His recent defensive partner, Olly Lancashire had to come off in the 50th minute against Wolves on Saturday and the young centre back is doubtful for the trip to Reading.

The young Southampton defensive have missed Svensson`s experience at the back. The Saints have conceded 16 goals in ten Championship encounters without the Commanding Swede.

The Swede, who celebrates his 33rd birthday next Tuesday, declares his eagerness to play in Saturday`s match: "We'll see how the rest of the week goes," he explained. "I will train for the remainder of the week and get some more game practice in training before Saturday which hopefully will be enough."

Great to see him finally get back to playing, such a shame to suffer another set-back after a good start. Hope he can kick on from here because I fear another bad one would put pay to his career.

Yeah, when he has played the whole team looks more composed and confident. His presence must be so inspirational for the youngsters. Like you said, I hope he can keep fit and hopefully we can climb the table...
