Wotte's balancing act

Southampton have put a massive emphasis on youth this season, and with Saints struggling at the wrong end of the table, it looks as though too much pressure has been placed on the young players' shoulders.

Head Coach Mark Wotte has started to address this issue during his first three games in charge, with older heads like Jason Euell and Paul Wotton playing a more prominent role.

Wotte is keen to find the right blend of youth and experience, and if he achieves that, he's confident that the results will come.

Speaking to The Daily Echo, Wotte said, "I still believe in the young boys and we will have nine players 22 and under in the squad (for the Bristol City game) some of whom are academy boys.

"I still believe they are talented but because of the difficulties in the table and the situation we are in I will choose one or two more experienced players instead of the youngsters.

"It is up to me to get the balance right. Maybe it will be six older players to five younger players or seven to four but these are decisions I make and I need to get the balance right.

"The quality is there with the young boys and we need to win games."

The penny has dropped! Whilst we have some good youngsters at the club, playing them all together won't get you results. It's all about getting the right mix of youth and experience and I'm delighted that Wotte realises this. This is a big admission by Lowe too, and we won't get any closer to him admitting that his youth emphasis was wrong.

I'm glad to see Euell start today. It seems more balanced. Still ANOTHER loss though!
