Saints edge closer to League One

Both Watford and Barnsley gained three points over fellow Championship strugglers Southampton tonight.

Watford ended Swansea City's 16 game unbeaten run in all competitions by winning 2-0 at Vicarage Road.

Goals from Tamas Priskin and Tommy Smith made sure the Hornets would end the night outside of the relegation zone.

In the Yorkshire derby between Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley, it was the Tykes who took the three points thanks to Jamal Campbell-Ryce's strike. The result moves Barnsley up to 18th.

These crucial wins for both Watford and Barnsley leave the Saints, along with Norwich and Charlton, in a desperate situation at the wrong end of the table.

Saints entertain high flying Preston North End on Saturday at St Mary's, for what is another massive game for the Hampshire side.

However, the table does not lie, and with Saints having recorded just one Championship win at St Mary's in 16 attempts, and with Preston looking to secure a playoff spot, it looks as though the south coast club face an uphill challenge to get anything from the game.

Could last night's results have gone any worse for us?! Without even kicking a ball, we are closer to league 1! PNE at home on Saturday is massive for us. All of the teams around us are winning, so why can't we!?

Almost every result went against us last night, although Plymouth losing is good for us as they look like being dragged into the relegation mix on current form. Last night's results just make this Saturday even more vital!
