Saints sign Colchester captain

Dean Hammond has joined Southampton on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Hammond shared his excited to the Daily Echo: 'This is a massive club with a Premiership set up and it represented an opportunity that I couldn't turn down, so I'm just very excited about the move,' the 26 year-old said.

'The Club has got a massive ambition to get back to the top. We're in League One at the moment so obviously promotion is the aim, and I want to be a part of that.'

Hammond is pleased to be playing for ex-West Ham boss Alan Pardew and said: 'Alan Pardew is a top manger too. 'He is a Premiership manager who has done it all before. I know a lot about him and I look forward to working with him.'

The former Colchester captain is aware of the young talent at the club, but believes he has enough experience to earn himself a place in Pardew's side.

'I know that there are a lot of talented young players at Southampton and some experienced ones too. I've played for a couple of years in League One now and I've been in the Championship too so I know what the level is all about so I hope I can bring a bit more to the side.'

Great signing! I've seen Dean a few times, and he looks the part. Colchester have had a great start, and hopefully Hammond can bring us that joy! COYR!

Very good. Very, very sad.

Cant fault his effort. Always gives 100%. Just a pity his new side will be looking upwards towards the team he's left.

Southampton's form at the start of the season sucks. Although I think he said he partly went for family reasons, deep down I know he also went for the cash.
