After Saturday's disappointing 2-1 defeat at Tranmere, Saints missed out on a golden opportunity to make ground on fellow promotion hopefulls as Swindon and Hudderfield lost, and Millwall and Walsall drew. The result leaves us in 10th, 15 points behind the play-off zone, but now crucially with only ONE game in hand as Millwall's draw gave them that coveted 6th position!
Team's that may slip as the run in approaches will be Swindon and Huddersfield in my opinion, and I think Millwall will stay the distance, but can we catch either of these teams up, whilst not forgetting Bristol Rovers or MK Dons . . . A look at the run in shows that, with matches against Leeds, MK Dons, Bristol Rovers, Swindon and Charlton, it will be tricky, but we will also have a chance to gain points against these higher teams, and in truth we do thrive in these sorts of matches!
The crucial matches will be AWAY matches against teams like Brighton, Yeovil and Gillingham and we need to banish our fear of playing away vs. teams like Exeter, Brentford, Wycombe and now Tranmere; these will be the crucial games when we will begin to see whether this team can get us into the championship this season. I think it is unlikely that we will reach the promised land this season, and I think we realistically need now to win ALL our remaining games to stand a chance!
Nonetheless, next season is looking very promising and, if we don't make it this season, I definitely think that we will achieve promotion next season ! COYR ! ! ! !
