'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Southampton - St Mary's Stadium From 'The Dell'

Having followed Saints from 1956 I must admit that nearly all of my favourite memories stem from the days of 'The Dell'.

I have seen some magical cup games such as one against Manchester United. Two up at half time a certain youngster called George Best showed how good he was going to be as he helped turn the tables with United winning 3-2 in the end.

The home game of three that we played when replays were the norm against Nottingham Forest the year before. Three down with time running out when we fought back to equalise at the death. In April 1963. The replay though not at home was a game whoever saw it will never forget.

The last game at the Dell against the Gunners was also another that will remain for us for as long as we live. My youngest will also remember even though too young as we have the dvd. Still brings the feelings that we had that night flooding back.

Everybody whether a Saints fan or not will have a favourite game that they can remember from when we played at the Dell. Some of the younger brigade will never have seen us play at the Dell but they will start having memories of the new ground.

So do you have any recollections of either ground?

I can still remember the Archers Road and the massive gates that we used to get in for the last few minutes when kids. I still think we have a better ground but as of yet we have not made it a fortress like the old ground could be.

I am sure that given time we will all love our ground. St Mary's is a much bigger and better ground for watching the games. So far the best atmosphere has to be the Sheffield United game at the end of the season which we won 3-2. MK Dons this season was a good night as well.

All I have seen are videos and dvd's where games were played there. Did look small and very old.
