'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Southampton's Green Green Grass Of Home

Head groundsman Andy Gray has had his team working hard on the league's best laid pitch in league division one last season.

Part of the process in the preparation of the pitch for next season, was the removal of 60 tonnes of topsoil.

'We've spent the last week to ten days removing around 80 cubic metres from the surface of the existing pitch,' Gray explained to the OS.

Though the way that the soil was removed means the turf is unusable, the head concho says that the topsoil is in great condition.

This offer from the club is totally free topsoil so that we can grow our own version of St Mary's pitch at home.

Having won the prize for best pitch in League One last season the ground crew fully intend to try repeating the feat next time round.

With the World Cup coming up and the likelehood of plenty of barbeques over the summer this is the perfect solution to improving your lawn.

Andy recommends that the topsoil when collected, has some seed mixed with it before spreading it over the top of the lawn.

For those interested, the top soil is located at the far end of the Stadium's South Car Park. All you need to do is turn up with bags and shovels and yopu can take away as much as you need.

I think that this is a good gesture by the club and helps us remain a close affinity with it. Good show.

Sounds like a cost cutting exercise to me as he tries to soothe the fed up fans who are not going to be going to many games next season.

this is a sure fire hit with the fans who live close enough to take advantage. I can not see that many people getting involved.
