Southampton - League 2010/11 Rivals Bournemouth

Southampton and Bourneouth have only played against each other competitively 18 times. The last occasion being in the 1987/88 League Cup.

On tuesday 22nd September saints travelled to Bournemouth and lost 1-0 in a close encounter. The return on the 6th October ended up as a 2-2 draw. This resulted in Bournemouth going through to the next round.

1959/60 was the last season which saw the two sides meet in a league. The League then was the old Division Three.

The first game that season was at the Dell on Wednesday 24th February. In an entertaining, high scoring game, Saints edged it 4-3.

The return match on Saturday 23rd April Saints won with a bit in hand. The score that day was 3-1 to Saints and we ended up winning promotion that season.

Last season the Bournemouth Manager performed minor miracles over and over again to get them promoted in an automatic place.

Money problems meant an embargo was placed on the club, but even though the club was unable to sign players, Eddie Howe kept the club at or near the top.

Now that the embargo is lifted the club has been able to strengthen and could prove to be a danger to most clubs through their work ethic and refusal to admit defeat.

Their fans seem to have a grudge against us for some reason, though why I have no idea. Where as we treat like a small cousin and quite like them they on the other hand treat us as a local rival.

In 1997 about 2000 of us Saints fans turned up for a special benefit match which had been set up to aid the Cherries in an hour of need.

Saints fans even put extra money into their collection outside the stadium to aid their cause and got over 90 minutes of verbal abuse for our kindness.

As a Saints fan I am quite looking forward to this game. I will be able to see the Cherries for the first time in ages and will be able to check them over as to their possible prospects for the coming season.

i know a coupl of Bournemouth fans and they are really anti Saints in a big way. I laugh at them but they are saying that they will be laughing long and loud after they knock the smug looks off our faces.

"Their fans seem to have a grudge against us for some reason, though why I have no idea." 1 reason = "we treat like a small cousin". Another reason = "Saints fans even put extra money into their collection outside the stadium" as did EVERY club who visited Dean Court, but its only your lot who bring it up all the time and act like it was you who saved the club.
DJ
DJ I think the point he was making was the fact that over 2000 of our fans went for that game and just got loads of abuse for their efforts. There is a time and place for abuse and when someone is going out of their way to help you is not the time. Will you be going to the game?
sfc4ghg
Of course.
DJ
As a season ticket holder in block 42 this year, it should be a cracking match and atmosphere!
Red army comrade
I thought Block 42 had been given to us for the Cup game? What area of the ground is that and how much does it hold?
DJ
Yes as it is you, we are giving a full allocation of tickets. Block 42 is for you if you buy up all your tickets
sfc4ghg
well, I get the option to move to another place... will probably move to Itchen north.
Red army comrade
DJ do enjoy the game but not too much I hope. Yes as GHG suggested I was mentioning the grief we received more than the few shillings we donated. We also appreciate what a good job you lot did last season to get up to this division.

I can understand why there is some hatred there, us being the ''big club'' and constantly trying to 'help' them could be seen as us being 'patronising' - The only thing to make it really spiced up would be for us to sign Pitman! (only joking).
Red army comrade
I is a 19yo girl and think it stupid to hate someone cos they have a difrent colour shirt. I like saints and believe me we have some tasty guys kickin for us but other teams have some fit players an all.
VS sparkle
I hope that you are not being sexist Sparkle. Can't go around saying things like other teams have some. That is insinuating that our players are better looking than the rest as a whole.

This was a good article up to a point as it brought some response. I know how some of the Cherries feel cos I used to be a Millwall fan living near to them as I did. Most of the nearby London teams looked down on us. Slightly different maybe with the circumstances but similar I feel
