Southampton season 2010/11 opponents Colchester

The Us are by size a little team from Essex. They play out of the Colchester Community Stadium having left Layer Road in for the start of the 2008/09 season.

This was not a good season for them as they ended up in their first season relegated back to the First Division.

Last season Colchester had a reasonably good season as they finished just behind us outside the play-offs.

Their main rivals are Southend United with whom they contest the Essex Derby. The head to head for this competition is Southend 29 wins, 17 draws and Colchester 23 wins.

Colchester have a fierce rivalry also with Wycombe. This dates back to both clubs' latter years of life in the Conference.

Season 1985/86 saw Wycombe win an FA Cup game 2-0 in a game marred by crowd trouble at Loakes Park.

Whilst Colchester's biggest claim to fame is a 3-2 win over Don Revie's Leeds United in 1971. Their highest ever placing was 10th place in the championship in season 2006/07

Not a lot then for anyone to write home about unless you happen to support the Us.

So how will we finish against them this season. I believe we will win comfortably at home. Last season we managed a 0-0 draw at St Mary's as we tried to get a team together.

The return leg at Colchester, in our run-in, was a 2-1 win for them in a game we could and should have done better. This year we will not be so surprised by the smallness of their ground and I fully expect to see us win the three points.

I feel that they may do a little less well this season and may finish in the middle of the table.

They're a different team this year, with the new manager looking to strive away from the 'hoofball' that they had under Aidy Boothroyd. As someone who went to the away match last year the atmosphere in the new 'weston homes community stadium' is little short of awful, and the lighting didn't do much to help the fog that day, the ball boys and such also have a knack for refusing to get the ball and time wasting... so hoping we stuff them by 3 or 4 goals.

I take it the new ground is not one of your favourites Red army comrade. What did the pitch seem to play like?

Pitch? well the Weston community homes stadium is very unique in the respect that it doesn't have a pitch, they do however have a very large cabbage patch which the team plays on instead. To call it bad would be an understatement and after going to the away game and watching the Southend match on the tele, how they are even allowed to play on that pitch baffles me!

Correction; the WHCS does have a pitch and it is looking very nice indeed now. Up the U's!
