'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Football League Agrees Lower TV Deal

This deal is worth £195 million which will be a drop of income for the Npower Football League of £69 from the current deal worth £264 million.

The main reason for the drop in income, is the withdrawal of the BBC from showing live football once the current deal runs out.

A spokesman for the BBC said: 'Given the current financial climate and the internal strategic review being carried out through Delivering Quality First, we were not in a position to be able to make a competitive bid for the Football League live TV broadcast rights.'

Under the new agreement Sky will be showing 75 matches from the Npower football League, and the Play-offs including the three finals.

They will broadcast 15 matches from the Carling Cup which will include the two semi-finals and the final.

They will also show the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and at least two of the preceding rounds.

They will also be showing match highlights.

In it's statement the Football League stressed that it is still in ongoing talks with regard the showing of free to air match highlights.

I know that we are still in a recession but this news comes at a bad time with several clubs struggling to make ends meet.

It is hoped that once the recession has ended and people get back on their feet companies will be better able to cope with the increased shortage of funds.

Then hopefully somebody can pick up the tab and bring football back to normal TV for those that don't or can't get Sky.

Bad news for the smaller clubs that need the money to stay alive. They are making it harder all of the time for these clubs.
