Southampton 2 - 1 Preston North End

Adam Lallana came off the bench to send the Saints into the fourth round of the Carling Cup.

The 23-year-old scored the winner as Southampton extended their home league win streak to 14 when they beat Preston 2-1 at St. Mary's.

Saints defender Jos Hooiveld put the home side 1-0 up in the 27th minute with a smart header from inside the six yard box.

Phil Brown's Preston leveled the match seven minutes into the second half when Adam Barton reacted the quickest after Bartoz Bialkowski could not handle Darel Russel's shot.

But Lallana had the last word at St. Mary's with a clever header after being on the pitch for just two minutes.

The Southampton starlet started and finished the move in the 66th minute. Lallana was able to divert his header past Andreas Arestidou in the Preston goal.

Southampton now have to wait and see who they will face in the fourth round. An all Hampshire tie could happen with Aldershot Town F.C reaching the fourth round of the League Cup in their history.
