Adkins Admits Lambert Decision Was Huge

Nigel Adkins has admitted that he had to brave and drop Rickie Lambert today because of the game plan he intended on using.

Speaking to saintsfc about the decision to place our top scorer on the bench, Adkins said.

'It was a big call today to leave our Rickie, a massive call. I've got to make decisions that I believe are right for the team. Believe me, Rickie is the last person I want to leave out, but I had to and be brave enough to. We came with a game plan. I wanted us to be in a situation where we could be smart to give ourselves a chance. Guly was up there to gallop around for as long as he could, and then I knew that we would have the freshness of Rickie and Billy to come on, have an impact and give ourselves a chance to score.'

Have an impact Lambert certainly did, finding the net within three.four minutes of his introduction.

Adkins adds that Lambert did everything he wanted from him today, and decisions like this will litter the season as it's a squad game, and not about a single 11.

'The lads have been made well aware of it from day one, it's not about 11 players. I'd be astonished if I don't use three subs in every game, so they've got to make an impact coming off the bench.'
