Neither are own goals either sadly.
Speaking to saintsfc after the 2-2 draw against Fulham today, Nigel Adkins was left ruing the chances we spurned and more defensive errors that made life difficult for us. Although to come back from behind did show good character it has to be said, and if anything shows again we can more than compete with our team we just need to be more clinical in all areas of the pitch.
'We had opportunities in the first and second half but if you get those then you need to put them in the back of the net. We started well in the first half and pressed the ball very well which led to a good goal from Jose Fonte. We just weren't able to sustain that. The game became far too open for us and we couldn't get a grip, we started to defend too deep.'
As for Hooiveld's second own goal, Adkins says the fact the ball was going wide proves we were sitting too deep and it's something we can't keep doing.
'I've just been made aware that the own goal was going wide when Jos defelected it in, but it underlines that he is inside the 6 yard box and we can't be so deep. In the cold light of day we had the character to come back, but it's fair to say the second half was nowhere near what we are capable of producing or have done already this season.'
As for Frazer Richardson, Adkins says it looks like he's pulled his thigh muscle so the international break has come at a good time for us, especially with Nathaniel Clyne and Gaston Ramirez both having dead legs of differing degrees which caused them to miss today's match.
Neither player is expected to leave on international duty.
In more positive news, Adkins adds.
'It's very pleasing that we aren't in the bottom three for the break, but at this stage of the season you don't even look at the league really. We have just picked up a point to get us out of the bottom three so we will take the positives.'
