'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Home Comforts Bring A Smile From Nige

Nigel Adkins talked about our St Mary's double header against Reading and Sunderland as games that we should go and win, and the team are on track for that.

Speaking to saintsfc following the game the boss said.

'I think we dominated the game and were worthy winners with the amount of chances we created and we could have probably put a few more in the back of the net. We are good at St Mary's and the fans get behind the players here and we play a good tempo of football. It was a good 1-0 victory here today. We talk all the time about the importance of winning your home games, and it's important to win the games against the teams who are in and around you.'

One of the standout issues from the game was Puncheon's disallowed header in the first half, Adkins having watched it back does believe the referee erred but he was pleased it didn't change the result of the game.

'It was a perfectly good goal in my opinion. The goalkeeper has pushed Maya who was standing around him, he slipped and Jason is unmarked. He's good, he has matured and had a good pre season. Since he has come back it has been a fresh start if you like and he has grasped it with both hands.'

But Adkins couldn't resist adding.

'He scored a good goal today and could have had more, maybe he should shoot more often!'

As for the extent of Adam Lallana's injury, Adkins commented.

'He has picked up a knee injury and as a precaution as we always do we have put him in a brace and on crutches. We will let it settle down, assess him tomorrow and take it from there.'
