Lambert - Not Pretty But Deserved

Rickie Lambert has said we ground out an important result for us against Aston Villa, even if it wasn't the prettiest of games.

Speaking to saintsfc following our win today, Rickie was pleased with the day's return.

'We're grinding out results. It might not have been one of our best performances today, but it was an important result. I was happy to see my penalty hit the back of the net, and for it to be the winning goal is even better. I thought we played very well in the first half and it was only a matter of time until we were going to score, whether that penalty went in or not. We came out thinking we were going to push for a second, but we were disappointed with our second half performance.'

Lambert adds, like Adkins did, that fair play to Villa for getting themselves back in the game performance wise and putting us under pressure, but Lambert was pleased with the way we coped during that time, keeping the cleansheet, even if we did have to dig in.

Rickie is right about us having to dig in but we also road our luck though we could and probably should have scored again. Looking at the game overall I am pleased with the result and the fact we were able to keep a clean sheet.

Good that we have done that but stiffer tests to come.

We dug out a result but were helped greatly by Villa and we should not get carried away by the win.
