Rickie Lambert believes it wouldn't be unfair for him to grab a much treasured England cap...considering he's the joint highest scorer in the Premiership.
Ambitions of grandour or a sensible outlook? He is of course tied with Arsenal's Theo Walcott and one goal ahead of Man United's potato head.
Surely if Roy Hodgson is right in picking players on merit, picking players performing and not just sticking tirelessly with an guard who never perform for the country they are picked for...surely that record deserves him a chance.
Apparently not.
Speaking to the Independent Lambert himself said after being ignored in the latest selection.
'I'm not saying I expected it, I wasn't. But I was hoping. I don't think my age is a hindrance.'
Now despite being English, I have no real love for our international team because successive managers have systematically chose players that basically didn't care, never performed, or were their because they were the media favourites of the season.
Would I rather see Rooney whinge, or Lambert give his all. Lambert. Would I rather see Terry wonder about his next PR gaffe? Would I rather wonder about Ferdinand and Cole work out if they can play with Terry? Would I rather see Defoe do little, whilst he ponders can Lampard and Gerrard play together?
I'll tell you the answer, I don't see. I haven't watched England in years. But if Hodgson has the balls to pick so called unfashionable players who would at least give their all for their country, I might take an interest.
As an international side, could we do any worse than we have done by selecting the media wonder boys who let us down game on game?
