Saints FC This Day In History

Overall Saints have played 12 games on March 4th. We have managed just 2 victories with 7 drawn games and three losses. Goals have been at a premium with two exceptions, having scored 15 and let in 19.

In 1972, Leeds were flying high and Don Revie was keen to rid the club of the 'Dirty Leeds` tag that had cast a black cloud over the most successful period in the clubs history.
Don was keen to prove that The Whites weren`t just a team of hard-tackling, fearless and uncompromising footballers, but also one that was bursting with skill, flair and talent.
The 4th of March 1972 will be a day Saints fans don`t want too many reminders of, but for Don Revie`s Leeds United, it was a day where the footballing world was forced to take notice as the Whites mercilessly destroyed Southampton by seven goals to nil.


Mick Channon actually had the first shot of the game, but once Sprake had comfortably smothered that, Leeds dominated the next 88 minutes though Saints held out until the 37th minute.

The highlight from this infamous defeat was a 32 pass move involving the whole Leeds team, except Jack Charlton.

Peter Lorimer scored (3), Allan Clarke (2), Charlton and Mike Jones netted as well to complete the rout.

As I said not my favourite memory but one which saw the best of the Leeds United that had quality throughout their team.
