'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Poch - We Deserved That Win

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that Southampton deserved their hard fought victory over Hull City last night.

A solitary goal from defender Jose Fonte in the 69th minute proved to be enough to separate both sides until full time and it earned the lads their second consecutive away win on the bounce - something we haven't achieved since 2001.

Speaking to saintsfc following the one nil victory, Pochettino was clearly delighted by the performance and the effort the players put in on the evening and he explained.

'I just want to congratulate the players because they did very well. We were facing a tough opposition and a team that had reinforced quite a bit in the transfer window, and we showed a great defensive solidarity at the back. We were defending with the possession.'

Pochettino went on to repeat his usual mantra that it's vital Southampton continue to play each game the same way, irrespective of whether we are home and away, because we have to stamp our authority on the opposition and play the game at our pace and to our strengths.

'I think that was quite special in the fact that we were defending with the possession so we were dominating the game and also going ahead as we were defending.'

The gaffer also praised the travelling support who numbered 1084 on a cold and long Tuesday night journey to Humberside, and despite their efforts in getting to the game, he couldn't have been more pleased with the backing they gave to the team during the game.

Following our rather lengthy 'rest' in ninth place, the win also moves Southampton up to eighth place as we now leapfrog Newcastle - but they do have a game in hand at the moment. Eight points off 5th place.

People will be thinking.
