Team Spirit On Display Again For Fonte

Team Spirit On Display Again For Fonte

Match winning defender Jose Fonte has said that our victory over Hull City last night shows the team spirit that has been a topic of news when it comes to Southampton over the last few weeks.

Fonte not only put in a good defensive display along with the rest of the lads, but he also found the all important goal on 69 minutes and although it was a scrappy, scrambled effort, they all count and that one counted for all three points.

Speaking to saintsfc Fonte said that Hull were one of the toughest tests we will face this season, so to come through it with flying colours is a just desert for everyone.

'They're a very good team and we have a lot of respect for Steve Bruce and the way he set the team up. We knew it was going to be one of the hardest games of our season. But we dug deep and I think we showed a lot of character, desire and belief. We got our reward with the three points and a very important clean sheet.'

As for his direct impact on achieving those three points Fonte says very humbly that basically he was just in the right place at the right time, and he was pleased to be able to help out the team and his colleagues at the other end of the pitch and help us take the win, because all that matters is how we keep pushing on in the remainder of this season now, and we have now got our noses in front of Newcastle and are closer to that higher pack of teams which is where we want to be.

Whatever happens in the Newcastle game tonight, we are closer than we were this time last week, and that is what counts.

Fonte ended his interview by heaping praise on fellow centre half, Maya Yoshida, for his efforts and performances in the team after he replaced the injured Dejan Lovren.

'I thought Maya was excellent. He was strong and good in the air, he was faultless. When you don't play in consecutive games it's hard to come into the team and do well, and it's very important for him and his ambitions to play in the World Cup that he plays so I'm happy for him. He's helping the team do well.'

A third game against Sunderland this season now beckons, and Fonte is under no illusions as to what it would mean to have another trip to Wembley and win the FA Cup for both the players and the fans, and that will now be the aim as we look to take our league form back into the historic domestic cup competition.
