Superb Team Performance For Shaw

Superb Team Performance For Shaw

Young left back Luke Shaw has praised the entire team following our victory over Newcastle.

Speaking to saintsfc as we gear up for the next fixture, Shaw's focus was mainly on the goal scoring exploits of his team mates and whilst he knows that Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez and Adam Lallana will certainly take the headlines for the rest of the week, he was quick to point out everybody else in the team that was deserving of praise following a proper team showing.

Of course for 18 year old Shaw, it was also an opportunity to discuss Southampton's ability to produce good youngsters as he was one of six Academy graduates in the match day squad.

'They are always incredible, every week. You can say those three were the main ones but it was a performance from everyone and it's only going to get better.'

Shaw goes on to say that we knew exactly what to expect from Newcastle in terms of how they play, being physical, direct and getting the ball into the air but for him he thought defensively Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren were immense on the day and more than kept Cisse quiet.

'I think our two centre backs played very well, then, up top, the front three were superb and scored four goals. But it's not just them, Calum Chambers came in and was superb, and James Ward-Prowse in the middle was again superb.'

Shaw wasn't finished there though as he went on to say that midfielder Steven Davis probably doesn't get the credit he deserves following games, but he feels week in and week out he's one of our best players.

There's also a little bit of praise for himself as well in terms of being delighted at keeping another clean sheet, adding that really it's all credit to manager Mauricio Pochettino because he wants the full backs to get forward, get high and wide and make themselves known in the final third and that suits his own qualities perfectly as he loves to be able to attack and bomb forward.

'We're all starting to get to know each other's games and we're only going to get better. We've got a lot of young players that will get older, more experienced and improve as players. It's not just me, there are plenty more youngsters coming through and it's not going to stop.'

Shaw finishes the interview by saying that the Academy will keep producing good youngsters, and we already have the next batch coming through, and that will be the basis on which the club pushes forward on.
