Saints Confirm Long Capture

Saints Confirm Long Capture

Southampton have today confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland international striker Shane Long.

The 27 year old moves to us from Hull City for a fee speculated to be £12million, although the club say undisclosed.

He has signed a four year deal with us and it will be his sixth season playing in the top flight following spells with West Bromwich albion and Reading.

He is likely to make his debut in our season opener against Liverpool this weekend.

Speaking to saintsfc manager Ronald Koeman explained.

'Shane is a very good player. As a striker, he's different to Graziano Pelle, which is something we needed. He brings ambition and a great mentality - he's always running and working, and he's very down to earth. He's a great person and we need that type of player.'

Having only joined Hull last January, Long admits the move came out of the blue but it's one he's delighted to have made.

'This came out of the blue for me but, once I'd come and had a look at the facilities and met the manager, it seemed like the right decision for me and my family. It was a hard decision to make, but when you come down to Southampton you see how big a club it is and how well set up it is.'

In almost 300 appearances across his career so far, Long has netted 80 times.

It's also being reported today that we have accepted a £3million offer from Crystal Palace for midfielder Jack Cork.
