Koeman Satisfied With Second Half
Manager Ronald Koeman was delighted with the way the players reacted to his words at the half time break because for him, the first half showing was no where near acceptable.
It was a very sluggish start for Southampton in the game in London, and arguably we were lucky to go into the half time break on level terms and the manager made no secret of the fact he was not a happy man at half time when he spoke to saintsfc after the game.
'I'm happy about the reaction in the second half, we were much better and we had many chances. The first half was very bad, it looked like the team was playing at 70% and you know that in cup football you have to be at 100% - if not, you get into trouble.'
The manager goes on to say that clearly in the first half we were in trouble and when their player got through one on one with Fraser Forster, for him sloppiness of that kind is 'impermissable at this level'.
'We spoke at half time, and I was very unhappy. You can play badly - it's part of the job - but you have to give 100%.'
He goes on to say that he changed the system at half time and for him we were miles better and much more like what he expects from us, and of course with Graziano Pelle scoring his first goal for us, he couldn't have been more pleased for him as it should lift the pressure and give him confidence so he can kick on further.
Having opened his competitive account, Pelle himself told the press after the game.
'With myself I always say two times (games) it can happen (not score), but the third match I have to score, wherever I was. If in two matches I didn't score, in the third one I had to. I was happy.'
