Southampton Snare Bednarek

Southampton Snare Bednarek

On Saturday afternoon Southampton announced the capture of Poland Under 21 international Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan.

The 21 year old centre half has become our first capture of the summer and he's come in for an undisclosed fee on a five year deal and of course he's been linked with a move to us for a number of weeks now.

He won't be with us for the start of pre season training, he'll join up later in July owing to this summer's Under 21 European Championships and having been a regular for Lech as they finished third in the Polish top flight last season, he's also represented his country at every international level aged Under 16s onwards so far.

Speaking to saintsfc as his capture was announced vice chairman of football Led Reed explained.

'Jan is an extremely promising young player who possesses significant potential. We are delighted to bring him to the club, and we believe this will be the ideal place for him to continue his development. This is a particularly exciting time for him to arrive here, as he also has the opportunity to learn from Mauricio Pellegrino`s extensive experience of playing the centre-back position. Jan provides additional depth to the impressive amount we have in that area, with Virgil van Dijk, Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens having all performed so impressively there last season, and he provides us with another excellent central defensive option.'

Bednarek himself was delighted with the move and he's now looking forward to his Premier League experience.

'I am so happy that I could join a club like Southampton. This is the moment I have worked for that makes my dreams come true. It only gives me motivation to work hard, to show my skills and to help Southampton to get better and better. I think it's a good step for me, because I have heard Southampton is such a good club for young players, so I can improve here. I think it will be a good move for me.'

A secondary interview after he was announced as our first signing also had him say that he believed Southampton was clearly the best place for him given our track record of bringing on youth.

'I think it was the key for me to move here, that the young players are playing here. There are not a lot of clubs like this in the Premier League, so when I heard that Southampton is interested in me it was the only way I was thinking, that I wanted to come here, I wanted improve here and I wanted to be a player of Southampton. That was the most important, that young players are getting the chance here and can improve themselves.'
