Pellegrino Confirms Van Dijk Is In Contention

Pellegrino Confirms Van Dijk Is In Contention

Manager Mauricio Pellegrino has been holding his pre game press conference as we go into the weekend's game against Manchester United.

In time his full quotes from his media meet and greet will be with us, but to open with saintsfc quote him talking about team selection and the current state of play with injuries and a decision will be taken on Virgil van Dijk on Friday.

Matt Targett is struggling with an ankle problem ahead of Saturday's tie at St Mary's but he's the only one who will likely be out through injury and everyone else has a clean bill of health as the phrase goes.

'It is just Matt Targett, who has had some issues in his ankle, but the majority of them are ok.'

So to the subject of van Dijk, having been back in training now for a bit and taken in an Under 23 game in which he scored, Pellegrino admitted that he was extremely close to really coming into his contention once more, and a decision would be made on whether or not this weekend was appropriate tomorrow.

Van Dijk did of course make a late substitute appearance against Crystal Palace last weekend, so Pellegrino is talking about a starting berth.

'We`ll decide tomorrow, but every single week Virgil is important because he is getting better. After a long period of time without playing a game he is training well. It`s good news for us, because we need Virgil, like every single player in our squad.'

He added.

'Virgil is a very important player for us. I think every single week he will improve, but at the same time he needs to train and play, because for me the best training session is playing games.'
