Hoedt & JWP On Fair Brighton Result

Hoedt & JWP On Fair Brighton Result

Wesley Hoedt and James Ward-Prowse have both been speaking about a tale of two halves as Southampton took a point from Brighton this weekend.

Heading to the Amex Stadium, we took a seventh minute lead through Steven Davis in a very strong start to the game, but a poorer second half saw the hosts level through Glenn Murray and that was where the scoring ended.

Speaking to saintsfc as Hoedt met with the media following the game, the centre half explained that we had let ourselves down after the half time restart.

'We started really well and deserved to be in front. After that, we dropped too deep and didn`t play to our strengths. We didn`t put enough pressure on their backline; they pressed harder than we did and that`s why they earned a point.'

The difference of course was between the two halves.

'We didn`t give anything away in the first half. After the restart, we were sloppy and were punished with the equaliser, which was one of their only big opportunities of the game.'

He added.

'We`ve let slip more points that we would have liked in the first 10 matches of the season but it`s up to us to turn that around as quickly as possible. Personally, it was great to get out there again this afternoon. I think there`s potential in our defence, not only between myself and Virgil but with all the other centre-backs in the squad.'

Ward-Prowse himself admitted that he felt the final score was fair with each team spending 45 minutes in charge.

With it being his freekick that came back off the woodwork for Davis to benefit from, he went on to say.

'I work hard to improve on my set pieces so I was pleased to be given that responsibility today. Unfortunately it didn`t go in for me but Davo did brilliantly to score on the rebound. We dropped off once we got in front. We did well in parts but overall but we`re disappointed that we`re not leaving with all three points. On balance, we didn`t do enough to win the game so a draw is a fair result.'

Ward-Prowse was however hoping that having moved into ninth place in the Premier League table, another push for the Europa League positions would be on the cards for us this year.

'We`ve improved in a lot of areas this season and I am confident that our goalscoring edge will return. Getting back into Europe should be our target; this club is built to compete on that stage. We achieved it a couple of years ago and there`s no reason why we can`t do that again this time.'
