Pellegrino Won't Be Drawn On Arsenal Winger

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino refused to comment on the speculation linking the club with a return for former youngster Theo Walcott.

A number of the bookies have Southampton are clear favourites for the former England man and Sky Sports reported that they 'understood' that Walcott was keen on a return to us and that he'd be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen. Further they believed that talks would take place over the next week or so.

Having come through our youth system before moving to Arsenal as a 16 year old back in 2006, Pellegrino wouldn't rule out a potential move, but equally he wasn't willing to overly confirm there was an interest.

'There are many players that we have interest in. I can't say anything because, obviously Walcott is an excellent player, but I can't confirm this. We are in the market ready to try to bring somebody that wants to come but I know it will be difficult. In January it is not easy to bring in players but the market is huge and I think we will have some opportunities. We have got a couple of targets, four, five, six targets. We have confidence that someone else can come and it will be great for us. We are looking for a player that can improve the level of the squad. In the market you never know until the end.'

With Southampton looking for a win for the last nine matches and sitting close to the dropzone in 17th place, goal difference keeping us ahead of Stoke City, Pellegrino admitted he was somewhat underfire at the moment but with the 'lucky' backing of the board given Chairman Ralph Krueger's recent words he remained confident we would turn it around.

'I am a lucky guy because these people trust in me and because I am in a really good club. This situation, I feel, is a big opportunity because we are working in the base of the squad and to be stronger from this difficult moment. Sometimes you are stronger when you past this period of time. I want to try and make the people proud of the team but now everybody has to be supportive.'
