Pellegrino Looking For Momentum
Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino has called on Southampton to use our victory over Fulham as a platform that we can build on with struggling league form.
Heading to Craven Cottage for the third round FA Cup tie, Southampton took a narrow one nil victory courtesy of a James Ward-Prowse goal and for many there was as much delight at progressing as their was relief having picked up the win.
Speaking to saintsfc as he met with the media following the game, Pellegrino explained of our first win in ten.
'It was important because we needed a performance like this to show to the others that we are really strong as a team. I think we defended well and we showed spirit from the beginning until the end of the game.'
'It was a difficult game, because Fulham are a good team who play good football and manage the ball well. But I think we looked dangerous on the counter-attack and could`ve scored the second goal. We have to use this as a base to improve and learn that we are capable of being solid. This performance can help us to be better next week.'
Having got the goal, Ward-Prowse also said that it was something we needed to build on post game.
'Before the game we knew it was going to be tough. On the run we`ve been on it was important to get a win. It wasn`t pretty, especially in the second-half, but we showed the character needed to grind out an important win. An early goal can always help the team settle down. I think we played some good stuff in the first-half at times and in the second-half we defended very well.'
He went on to explain.
'We had 5,000 fans and we needed to give them something to cheer about. We`ve not been happy with the way we`ve played of late, but no matter how we played it was important to get that winning feeling back in and around the team. We can use this now to kick on and try to build some momentum.'
