Ted Bates statue unveiled

Ted Bates statue unveiled

The Ted Bates statue has been unveiled and has received criticism from Southampton supporters.

£112,000 was spent on the statue designed by Ian Brennan.

But the bronze statue appears to be out of proportion, with short legs and long arms and has received quite a lot of criticism from Saints supporters who feel that the statue has not done Mr Southampton justice.

Speaking to the Echo Ian Brennan said: 'I've literally worked on it for seven days a week for the last 18 months,'

'Normally you need a minimum of 15 measurements of the face but because that wasn't possible I was photo hungry when I first started'.

'I just had to get on with it and look for as many images as I could, sculpting from photographs is not the cleverest way of doing it - Madame Tussauds would never work from photos alone because it's difficult to get the 3-D effect - and I had nothing to go by at all.

'I saw him from a distance at The Dell but unfortunately I never met the man, which didn't help.'

112k on a statue? 7 days a week for 18 months? Looks more like Milan mandric with long arms!

It's such a shame, I just hope Ted gets the memorial he deserves eventually.
