Time to roll our sleeves up

Time to roll our sleeves up

Southampton gaffer George Burley is under mounting pressure with his under performing Saints side letting any chance of promotion slip away.

Just under 2 months ago and Southampton were in a prime position to kick on and make a bid for the automatic promotion places.

Now Southampton sit outside the playoff places, in poor form and with no real self belief.

The players look as if the battle is already lost, while the manager continues to find excuses, the main one being injuries.

Now don't get me wrong, we have suffered this season, but Burley has had the support from the board particularly over the summer to form his own squad, if that lacks strength in depth than the buck firmly lies with him.

He told the Echo: 'Grzegorz Rasiak didn't play for Poland because he was laid low with a virus and unfortunately that is still the case, He hasn't been in for training because it's a nasty virus, so he's going to miss out.

'Gareth Bale's had a slight knock on his toe. Hopefully that won't interfere with him playing but he'll have treatment.

'Pele has no problems, Jhon Viafara is travelling back from the other side of the world so we'll see what he's like.

'Kenwyne Jones is out. He had an injection in his ankle on Tuesday but unfortunately he's still not training.

'Claus Lundekvam didn't train yesterday, he was feeling a sharp pain in the pelvis area which has come on very quickly.

'Hopefully it will settle down but he looks very doubtful'.

'We can't do anything about it, we can't feel sorry for ourselves,' he said. 'We have been very unfortunate with injuries this season but no matter who's available and who's not available we've got to roll our sleeves up and do our best to get a result'.

have to say i think this is a bit unfair on burley. any club in this division with this amount of injuries and other problems would struggle just as badly.
