League Attendances Up

The Football League's average attendances are at their highest for 47 years.

16.4m fans attended matches this season, the second highest behind the 18.1m people who attendended matches in 1959/60, which obviously also included England's top tier.

Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney told the BBC: 'It is very encouraging. These figures underline the tremendous commitment shown by fans towards clubs.

'Our challenge now is to move attendance figures past the 17m mark.'
