Loan system is wrong

With the news that Bolton have signed Danny Guthrie on a season long loan from Liverpool, I have to question the loan system.

This might sound like sour grapes as I would have loved to see him back at Southampton next season.

But Southampton themselves have also been guilty of it, with Inigo Idiakez having a spell at QPR just last season.

So what is my issue? Well it's loaning players to teams in the same division. Personally I think it is wrong and doesn't help teams further down the football league pyramid.

Football teams, especially in the Premiership, are now bigger in size then they ever used to be.

These players either waste their time in the reserves league or go out on loan with little or no chance of ever breaking into their first team squad.

But do we support a strong Football League by loaning players down the divisions? No you get Ben Foster spending a year in the Premiership with Watford before returning to Manchester United and Danny Guthrie joining Bolton from Liverpool.

Did it do Leon Best any harm going down a league to Yeovil? He came back and broke into the Southampton team due to his goal scoring form and obviously our disastrous luck with injuries.

Even David Beckham spent time at lower league side Bury.

It didn't adversely affect them and I believe the FA should do something about it.

Ive got to say I agree but Benitez and his staff will disagree as they get to see Guthrie competing in the Premiership, giving them a good idea of whether he can cut it at the top level. Theyre not going to get much much information from a man of the match display against Burnley because it wont mean he can do the same at Old Trafford.

Interesting viewpoint but I believe that what you're proposing is impractical. Firstly, from a legal point of view, it would probably be viewed as a restriction of trade, and if that's the case it wouldn't get off the drawing board. Secondly, Premiership teams need loans too (they don't all have huge budgets), so your system would penalise those teams, such as Bolton, that don't have huge financial clout. Lastly, there are three parties in any trade, the player, his team and the team taking him on loan, and it seems to me that your solution will, in some cases, hurt the most important party, the player, by denying him the best possible opportunity to develop his career and that can't be right.

Interesting article and you can certainly see both sides to the argument. Having gained promotion last season utilising the loan system not surprisingly I'll disagree with you...for now!

I agree totally, now let us have some of your best players on loan, as us Bristol Rovers fans are in desperate need of some new faces to add to our fast improving squad lol, worth a try
