Saints have been busy in the transfer window in the last 24 hours, as George Burley continues to rebuild his squad.
Firstly Brett Ormerod left on a free transfer, signing for Championship rivals Preston. Unfortunately Ormerod never adapted too well to playing at a higher level having signed for Saints from Blackpool under Gordon Strachan. At first his workrate made him a cult hero with fans but they've long since tired of his inability to score goals.
George Burley pulled his first rabbit out of the hat yesterday by signing Danish international striker Peter Madsen from Cologne to replace Ormerod.
Madsen has initially joined on loan until the end of the current campaign, as he's suffered injury problems this season.
The 27-year-old striker is close to fitness now and hopes to start scoring to earn himself a permanent contract at St Mary's:
'I just cannot wait to get playing. English football is more passionate than the game in Germany. They fight a bit more here but hopefully I can adapt.
'I like to work hard for the team and to score goals and I want to show the fans those qualities.
'I am here just to the end of the season and then we will look at it again. Hopefully I will do well enough for the club to keep me because I would like to stay.'
Saints also tied up the signing of Feyenoord defender Alexander Ostlund for an undisclosed fee. The Swedish international has signed a contract until 2008.
Ostlund is also 27 and the kind of experienced, quality player the Saints defence needs. George Burley told the official site:
'I know the Swedish manager who speaks very highly of him and he will add quality to the squad.
'He is a natural full-back who played every game for Feyenoord last season'
The transfer window will shut at midnight tonight but Saints are still looking to add further quality players to the squad, although they'll be pushed for time and further rebuilding may have to wait until the summer.
There should be time for Nigel Quashie to tie up a move to West Brom. Saints have accepted a fee of around £1.5 million for the former Pompey midfielder and Quashie just has to agree personal terms with the Baggies.
It's rumoured that Derby's Spanish midfield playmaker Inigo Idiakez is still interesting George Burley.
Yesterday Saints also appeared to be on the verge of signing highly rated Portuguese defender Pele from Belenenses for a deal worth £1.4 million, but news of the deal has gone cold for the time being - Pompey and West Ham are also reportedly interested in the player. It'd be good to sign him just to see Pele on the back of a Saints shirt, though it'd be pretty embarrassing if he was rubbish!
Vital Football will keep you up update with all the latest comings and goings on transfer deadline day.
