West Ham United v Southampton - 30/8/14

West Ham United v Southampton - 30/8/14
Even with the season only three games old the three points gained at West Ham meant the difference between a false low position in the table and a place in mid table respectability. In truth, anything less than an away win for Southampton would've been a complete travesty.

The only shock in Saints line-up was the omission of Wanyama, despite West Ham away from home seemed like the perfect match up for his battling, take no prisoners, style of play. The decision shows Koeman's ruthless streak and obviously will not be pandering to big name reputations.

In a very forgettable first half 2 goals were shared, whereas if it had been a boxing match Saints would've been adjudged to have won every round.

Whichever inspirational words Ronald Koeman included in his half time pep talk, Saints players responded magnificently by upping their tempo and playing with the real gusto and belief they were going to win.

The 3-1 final score did not really truly reflect the way the game went, especially during the second half when Saints were totally dominant in every aspect of the match.

From Forster in goal through to Pelle up front there were encouraging indications that Saints new signings were beginning to play on the same wavelength.

Despite being an all round team performance of considerable merit, Tadic and Ward-Prowse and Bertrand were extra noteworthy in their endeavours.

Morgan Schneiderlin demonstrated his professionalism by putting aside his frustration at the clubs refusal to sell him in the transfer window by putting in a sterling performance.

Conversely, Yoshida still does not inspire confidence at the back. He fits the bill as a squad player, but must feel very threatened by recent signings.

In conclusion, a great away day for the travelling fans and finally Saints can lay to rest the fact it had been eons since they have been able to overturn a deficit in a game into a winning score.
