So Much For A Summer Meltdown

So Much For A Summer Meltdown
With five games to play until the end of the season, Saints are still in the mix for a Europa league place.

Wow, which Saints fans and so called expert football pundits would have predicted that during last summers meltdown! Eight months is a long time in politics and, so it seems, football as well.

Saints season is boiling down to a three way fight with Spurs and Liverpool for a place in Europe's second cup competition. Despite the dreadful formatting of this competition, if successful, it will put Saints on the European map and will hopefully provide some great European nights of football, both home and away. A fifth place in the league would secure a better berth in this cup as it would avoid some pre-qualifying matches.

The biggest drawback with the Europa league is the number of extra matches and travelling involved, especially as the domestic league programme takes it toll. Teams progressing through the earlier matches will be required to take some long jaunts into far flung outposts of European football. For all its possible pitfalls in terms of tiredness, greater chance of injuries and extra travelling, I'm glad Saints are in with a great chance of battling on a European front, as well as domestically.

Wouldn't it be very sweet to get three points against Spurs on Saturday. Saints missed their chance of taking a scalp against Liverpool, but let's hope they can make amends against Spurs and further our chances of European football next season. It will need all eleven players playing at their very best, the crowd acting as twelfth man and maybe even a little luck.

This game will see the return of Pochettino and all that that will entail. Due to the unsavory taste left in Saints fans mouths after the way he left the club, I feel he deserves the hostile reception that he will receive. That being said, with him jumping ship, it has turned out to be a blessing in disguise now that we have Koeman at the helm.

Not only has the team improved under Koemans tenure but so has their likely final league position. He has already stated that he will complete his three year contract and won't go running to a bigger club if they come knocking. How refreshing that is to hear in these days of little loyalty from managers, or players.

Come on you Saints!
