Doom & Gloom - You're Having A Laugh

Doom & Gloom - You're Having A Laugh
Nine months ago the pundits, and I venture most Saints fans, were predicting a season of doom and gloom as a result of the fire sale of Saints best players.

In rides Saints' knight of shining armour, otherwise known as Ronald Koeman, and the rest as they say is history.

Koemans appointment was a stroke of genius from the Saints board. Little could they have known the dramatic transformation he would have on the team and the way in which the club as a whole is viewed externally. Through Koemans leadership and astute signings the team not only thrived, but also seriously challenged for a much vaunted Champions League berth.

This was despite the fact that five to six new players were thrown together in the deep end and had to gel immediately.

At the tail end of the season Saints faltered a little, possibly due to tiredness caused by a smaller squad than their Europe chasing rivals. This resulted in their desire for European football only being realized in the form of the Europa League. No Saints fan can in any way be disappointed with that.

So onto another summer of wheeling dealing before embarking on another campaign. Can Saints build on this seasons success and go even higher in the Premier League? Can they put together a string of results in the three cup competitions?

This last challenge is likely the only way Saints can seriously challenge for silverware.

As Koeman obviously treats the cups seriously, unlike a certain former manager, who's to say we can't have a decent run in Europe and possibly a trip to Wembley in one of the domestic cups?

Where do Saints need to strengthen during the summer?

A decent goalkeeper needs to be signed to act as understudy for the injured Forster. Quality replacements will be needed for the likely to be departing Schneiderlin, Clyne and Alderweireld. On the plus side Saints will have in effect a new signing, in the form of Jay Rodriguez, to boost the attacking options.

With European football beckoning, Saints also need some quality squad players to press the established players for starting places and to provide a stronger squad to challenge needed to gift in four different competitions.

All in all, it's been a brilliant season, not only results wise, but also the exciting and attacking brand of football that Koeman demands.

Here's to Saints, onwards and upwards!
