A Half Season Saints Review
It has been an up and down season so far with all the undulations canceling themselves out leaving Saints to tread water in mid table. At this point there is no real danger of being dragged down into the relegation mire, but at the same time there doesn't seem to be the energy or drive needed to push up the table into the European positions.
Highs from the season so far have included wins against Arsenal and Chelsea, but all too often these great results have not been followed up with wins against the less glamorous teams. In contrast, there was the big disappointment of being dumped out of the Europa league by Danish minnows. Koeman has highlighted Saints lack of consistency and he must feel like pulling his hair out at times watching his team.
Maybe some Saints fans expectations are unreasonably high after finishing eighth and seventh the last two seasons. Eventually Saints transfer policy of selling their crown jewels every season and not always finding cheaper like for like players was going to catch up with them. Maybe this is the season when the chickens come home to roost and Saints fans need to scale back their expectations and settle for mid table and hopefully a good cup run. Koeman has already expressed some discontent over Saints transfer policy and it will be interesting to see how that situation unfolds.
Individually, Saints players have been much like the team as a whole. Inconsistency has been the name of the game. Pelle, Tadic and Mane are probably Saints marque players and the creativity and goal scoring duties often fall to them. They have all had good games, but they have also all has bad days. This can be said if most if the rest of the team as well.
Notable exceptions include, Gazzaniga, Davis and Bertrand.
The biggest disappointment for me this season has been the form of Ward Prowse. He never seems to kick onto the next level. He isn't an effective dribbler, is not fast, can not score and his only savior is his dead ball ability.
I don't think he is up to Premier league standard and should be a squad player for Saints at best.
So what about the second half of the season?
I always try to be optimistic when it comes to Saints so I am going to predict finishing 8th in the league and going out of the FA cup in the quarter finals. I obviously hope Saints can out perform my predictions and have only just warmed up for the rest of the season.
