We Lose To Leicester...Meh!
The game in question, Saints away game at table topping Leicester City. Why such mixed feelings?
In the short term I wanted Saints to secure three points to further their push to gain European football next season and to secure another top eight Premier League finish. By the way, thus securing only the third time in their entire history when they have achieved three consecutive top ten finishes in the top flight.
On the other hand, taking the longer view was I prepared to sacrifice three points to enable rank outsiders and fellow unfashionable club, Leicester City, a step closer to achieving what twelve months ago prompted the bookies to offer the Foxes at 5000-1 to win the league.
As it turned out Saints were somewhat unlucky to succumb to a Leicester team that has certainly enjoyed the rub of the green when it comes to recent refereeing decisions. All I hope for now is that it is not three points dropped that result in not achieving European football next season.
The likes of Leicester City winning the Premier League gives tangible hope to the likes of Stoke, West Bromwich, Saints and other unglamorous teams from challenging at the top end of the league.
Congratulations to Leicester and let's hope they are they do not a Jordan Spieth and blow up over the last five games.
Back to Saints ups and downs.
After several inconsistent spells during the season that have prevented them from doing a Leicester, they have recovered and are finishing strongly with a real hope of European qualification.
Great wins against Liverpool, Stoke and Newcastle have left us poised nicely to come surging up the rails to nick European football. With about 24 from 25 first team squad players available for selection, they are in a strong position to continue their late push and let's hope they capitalise.
Up the Saints.
